A land of wonders on your doorstep
Winter is the ideal time to dream about your garden. What kind of flower bed would you like see every time you walk out of your door?
In spring, there could be vibrant reds and yellows showing that nature is awake and full of life again. Although it may sound conventional and boring to start the flowering year with bulbs, tulips, daffodils and crocuses provide a lively variety of form and colour. You won’t be able to explore the possibilities they offer all in one year. And don’t forget about the less glamorous heralds of spring, modest snowdrops or violets.
However, this glory will fade within a few weeks. It is time to plan ahead for the summer. Maybe your heart goes out to a traditional flower bed with colourful annuals, which will never become boring. A wide variety of colour, size and texture is also available in roses. With a little care, they will bloom right into the autumn and then display their delightful rosehips.
On the other hand, it may be worth a try to depart from these classical elements. Why not have a bed of delicious strawberries right outside your door? They even start the season with pretty white flowers. On a more serious note, you could complement them with aromatic herbs and other useful helpers in the kitchen. What their flowers lack in splendour, they make up with their appetizing scent. (But you may be in for a surprise, too. Just leave one or two of the Allium family -onions, garlic, chives – to flower …)
Autumn arrives in a riot of colour, not only in the forest, but also in your flower bed. Dahlias now come into their own. So don’t be too hasty with your preparations for winter. Take a few more days to enjoy the wonders just outside your front door.
