Oriental poppy is a beautiful flower that stands out in most gardens. Huge and cap shaped, the flower booms during the summer period. Out of the perennial poppies, the Oriental poppy colourful as it is is the only plant that that successfully weathers harsh conditions.

The plant has been a marvel to many artists as it is in the centre of gardening. If the flower blossoms fully, it usually reaches a full six inches across the stem and up to four feet in height. The colours include crimson, red, white, orange and crimson. The Oriental poppy does not do well in hot regions as it needs covering to avoid flopping when it has fully blossomed.

How to plant it
It is advisable that is planted during spring because it is when the conditions are most favourable. For starters, you should prepare the seed bed by using a filler or fork to loosen up the soil. The depth should be twelve to fifteen inches. After that, mix a layer of compost preferably two inches. The hole that the plants are fit it in should be twice the size of the pot that holds the plant. After that, remove the plant carefully from the pot and place it in the whole in such a manner that the root ball is on common ground with the surface of the soil. Fill soil around the plant and pour water thoroughly.
Care
Every spring, you should apply an inch of compost layer followed by mulch so as to aid in ventilation and also to get rid of weeds. In the summer, a lot of watering is needed because of long dry spells. During autumn, the poppies will naturally resume their foliage growth and the green leaves will persist till the winter. Winter is always associated with cold weather which makes the soil to freeze. Four to six inches of mulch should be applied to the plant so as to prevent heaving in case there are serious temperature fluctuations. In spring, you should gradually remove the mulch so as to facilitate ventilation again.
